Well it’s not all puppy dogs and rainbows.

I am a novice dog owner so it is both scary and sometimes frustrating. The interest, books, etc., are all filled with contradicting, anecdotal absolutes. Any progress in some areas is met with regression in others. This is the only dog I’ve ever encountered that hates going outside.

She’s had a rough couple of days, and has chosen to sleep all day today. The brief parts she had been awake have been ughhhhgghghfhh.

She wants to destroy everything. She wants to chase my cats, eat my couch, and fight with me every step of the way.

Then she does shit like this:

Kinja'd!!!

How can they get away with this stuff?

Give her a few days to get used to you guys and house. Then she will probably calm down.

As for the chewing when our wiener dog was a pup we would buy her the biggest rawhide bones we could find and she would hang out chewing that for hours. It works in two ways, one it gave her something to chew and two it was two big for her to move so we always knew where she was.

And DAAAWWWWWW WHO’S THE CUTEST PUPPY IN THE WORLD, WHO’S THE CUTEST PUPPY IN THE WORLD.

A lot of people will put toys everywhere so that the puppy always has something within easy reach. Watch out for toys that resemble clothing or shoes. If it’s not clearly a toy (squeaky or something) the dog may get confused and start chewing on the wrong things.

Remember that it will do as a 65 lb adult the things it learned as a puppy. If you let it on your lap while you drive, it will want to do the same when it grows up. Same goes for couches, beds, etc. Our dogs, both big and small, never get on the furniture because we taught them not to.

She’s not allowed on he bed or other furniture, but I had to sacrifice this couch to keep that (wife wanted her on the bed, I’m like hell no lady).

Well, the books can say all they want. Trouble is, the dogs don’t read the books.

Good news is you can train them. The bad news is you have to be persistent, and at that age, they have more energy than you.

They know that one cute thing erases ten ugly things.

I went through that stuff several times. Though I just rescue “Elderly” dogs now I do miss the puppy phase once in a while.

As long as she doesn’t get hyper-attached you’re in the clear.

We just got a puppy a week or two ago too... As my other dog is 11 years old, I had forgotten how much of a (admittedly adorable) pain in the ass puppies are. Someone else suggested toys everywhere in easy reach...this is what our formerly tidy house has turned into, but it really does help to have something to immediately substitute for nip on the hand or foot... I say that, and my couch, so far, is intact, but my hands are covered in little cuts and scratches and my kid’s socks are all being steadily ruined.

The real hard part is just the tiny bladder with poor control, combined with the fact that the puppy has not yet figured out stairs and our door opens to the deck with a looooong, gappy staircase down to the yard...I’ve never spent so much time outside in my underwear as the past two weeks of late-night doggy pee breaks.

On the bed? My dog isn’t even allowed on the couch.
With all the hair she’s losing and the dirt on her paws after a walk, she’s lucky to be allowed inside.
Also, she can stay inside at day, but at night or when I leave she is outside to guard the house (except when I fall asleep on the couch and she wakes me up at 1 AM so I can let her out).
